Trekking to Monte Sameiro – Sao Tome island

If you love an exciting hike and enjoy observing natural and man-made landscapes from afar, we recommend Monte Sameiro as the ideal destination for you.

Monte Sameiro is a tourist spot to explore in São Tomé. The place offers a breathtaking view of the green island of São Tomé, including the city, the interior, the south, beaches and many other exuberant spots in São Tomé.

Monte Sameiro, also known as Monte Clingolo, was the place where peasant festivals were held. The old peasants believed that they would get more rain and that the land would be more fertile around the peak if they venerated Santo Sameiro at the top of the Mount.

Location of Santo Sameiro:

The peak is located in the southern region of São Tomé with a satisfactory road for an unforgettable hike.

Hike to the top of Monte Sameiro: It is possible to hike to the top of Monte Sameiro. According to the experiences of Ban Bé Non Tours’ tour agents, it is easily reached without any climbing equipment, but there is a hiking path to the top.

What can we find in the surroundings and at the top of the peak?

In the surroundings of the peak, we can see plantations of small farmers, most of them over 50 years old, who enjoy the countryside as their only asset. They often plant cassava, corn and sugar cane, depending entirely on rainwater for irrigation.

During the dry season, called “Gravana”, which occurs in June, July and August, the peasants abandon their fields and invest in stones for building houses or in fishing.

Coconut trees are also an important part of Monte Sameiro, providing the peasants with a harvest of dried coconuts (valúdos), but with the passage of time and the felling of the trees, the coconut trees have disappeared in significant numbers.

At the top of the peak, there are two antennas, one from the telecommunications company, the other from a restricted building that stabilizes communications in the southern region of São Tomé.

In addition, we can find Christian practices, such as prayers, services and praises to God, following the example of Jesus Christ, who went up to the Mount of Olives in the morning to pray to God. These practices are still carried out today on Mount Sameiro. Come and see for yourself!
